Free Backpacks in Lakeland on Aug. 1, 4 and 8, With Polk Classes Starting Aug. 11

The Lakeland Branch NAACP will hand out free backpacks and school supplies from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Simpson Park Community Center, 1725 Martin L. King Jr. Ave., as part of its annual National Night Out event. It is one of three free giveaways happening inside the city in the next 10 days, and it comes exactly one week before Polk County students return to class on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Admission is free and open to anyone. Supplies last as long as they last. Along with backpacks, organizers have planned food, games, music and tables staffed by local community partners, according to local news reports. Representatives from law enforcement and public safety agencies are expected to attend, which is the whole point of National Night Out: it is a nationwide effort, held the first Tuesday in August, to get residents and the officers who work their neighborhoods talking to each other over hot dogs instead of at a traffic stop.

Three Lakeland giveaways, three sets of rules

The rules differ at each one, and they matter. Two of the three require the child to be there in person.

If you can only make one, the Aug. 1 event at Northbridge is the earliest and the shortest window. Two hours, then it is over.

The dates parents actually need

Polk County Public Schools opens the 2026-27 year on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Orientation for K-8, middle and high schools is set for Wednesday, Aug. 5, with elementary orientation the following day, Thursday, Aug. 6. Times and formats are set school by school, so check your child's school page before you drive over. The year runs through May 27, 2027.

Note that district calendar documents circulating online do not all agree on the orientation dates. The district's own 2026-27 enrollment and orientation posting lists Aug. 5 and Aug. 6. Families with a question about a specific campus can start at the district's back-to-school page.

Tax-free shopping ends Aug. 20

Florida's back-to-school sales tax holiday started July 20 and runs through Thursday, Aug. 20, which means it stretches nine days past the first bell. That is useful if a teacher's supply list turns out longer than you expected.

Exempt during the window: clothing, shoes, backpacks and wallets priced at $100 or less per item; school supplies at $50 or less; learning aids and jigsaw puzzles at $30 or less; and personal computers, laptops and tablets at $1,500 or less for personal use. Smartphones and game consoles do not qualify. Online orders count as long as they are accepted and processed during the holiday. The full qualifying-item list is posted by the Florida Department of Revenue.

The Lakeland Police Department has run National Night Out gatherings in past years, and no department-wide 2026 Lakeland event beyond the Simpson Park gathering had been publicly posted as of this week. Neighborhood associations that want to organize their own block event typically coordinate through the department's crime prevention practitioners.
