Florida's Back-to-School Tax Holiday Is On Through Aug. 20 — Right as Polk Classes Start

Florida's back-to-school sales tax holiday is running now through Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2026, letting Lakeland families buy clothes, shoes, school supplies, and even computers without paying state sales tax — a savings window that closes right as Polk County students head back to class in mid-August.

The timing is no accident. State lawmakers made the holiday a permanent annual event and shifted its dates to line up better with when Florida schools actually start, according to legislative records and local news reports. For most Lakeland households with school-age kids, that means the biggest shopping list of the year comes with a built-in discount — but only if you buy during the window.

What's tax-free right now

The exemption applies to specific categories, each with its own price cap per item. The caps are unchanged from prior years. Here's what qualifies:

Category	Tax-free if priced
Clothing, footwear & certain accessories, backpacks and bags	$100 or less per item
School supplies	$50 or less per item
Learning aids and jigsaw puzzles	$30 or less per item
Personal computers & related accessories (home use)	$1,500 or less

The price cap works per item, not per receipt — so a $95 pair of shoes and a $90 backpack both qualify even if your total climbs well past $100. But if a single item is priced above its cap, the whole item is taxable, not just the amount over the limit.

Why the deadline matters locally

Polk County Public Schools students return for the new year in mid-August. The district calendar approved by the School Board lists Monday, Aug. 10 as the first day of school, while the district's own back-to-school page has referenced Monday, Aug. 11 — so families should confirm their child's exact start date directly with their school or on the district calendar.

Either way, the tax holiday runs a little past the first day, giving parents a short cushion to grab anything that turns out to be missing once classes are underway. Waiting until the last minute, though, means picking through thinner shelves during the busiest shopping stretch of the summer.

How to get the most out of it

A few practical moves can stretch the savings further:

• Split big-ticket clothing. Because the $100 cap is per item, spreading purchases across several qualifying items keeps everything tax-free.
• Check the teacher supply list first. Many Polk schools post required-item lists — buying to the list avoids paying for extras you don't need.
• Save the computer purchase for now. The $1,500 cap covers most student laptops and tablets, and the sales-tax savings on a device that size are real money.
• Keep your receipts. If you're charged tax in error on a qualifying item, you'll want proof to request a correction.

For the complete list of qualifying and non-qualifying items, the state maintains an official guide on the Florida Department of Revenue's back-to-school sales tax holiday page.

With the calendar squeezing shopping time against the first bell, the message for Lakeland families is simple: the discount is here now, and it disappears Aug. 20.
